Key Events

  • Scotland 1 (Schar og 13) Switzerland 0
  • Scotland 1 Switzerland 1 (Shaqiri 26)

McTominay has now been credited with Scotland’s opening goal and rightly so. He almost gets a second with a thunderous goal-bound volley that is blocked. Switzerland go up the other end and Embolo races beyond the defence and chips the ball over Gunn into the net, but the assistant’s flag is up with the offside confirmed by VAR. This is tense stuff.

Injury-time chances

Scotland get out of jail as Switzerland somehow contrive to miss a close range headed chance as the clock hits 90. At the other end Andy Robertson ghosts in behind the Swis defence and his header across goal is cleared from inside the six yard box as Scotland looked set to score. Lawrence Shankland and Ryan Christie are on for the final few minutes.

It’s a point for Scotland that keeps them alive in the tournament and restores pride after the Munich debacle. McTominay’s early opener cancelled out by Shaqiri’s equaliser, gifted to Switzerland by a Ralston error. It was a performance that the Tartan Army can be proud of with Scotland finishing the match as the stronger side. A win over Hungary now required to potentially reach the last 16. Roll on Sunday.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson reflected on a positive performance had words for Anthony Ralston after his mistake gifted Switzerland an equaliser

Much more like us. Aggressive and on the front foot. Couldn't have got off to a better start, then obviously we make a mistake. But let’s make no mistake about it, Tony Ralston was unbelievable after that. Not many people could come back from that, it was a diffiuclt one for him, but second half he was different class.

Scotland were savaged by ITV pundits Graeme Souness and Roy Keane after the defeat to Germany, but Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart, who retired at the end of the season, has been much more complimentary of the team on the BBC following the 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

These guys aren't making it up when they talk about getting back to us, playing like us. They believe in what they do. They believe that if a Scotland team performs to how it should, then they can dance with anyone and they've proven that tonight. That's probably what they were more disappointed about with the Germany game. It's a difficult scoreline, but they didn't do what they believe they usually do on the big nights. They've put that to bed now, the belief is there. I think there were some excellent moments. Andy Robertson's just talked about Tony Ralston having a difficult moment then second half being there, putting his body on the line and really showing up for his team. That is what this Scottish team is about. Big moments, big players. There's a huge team spirit in there and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do on Sunday.

Yes! The draw with Switzerland has kept Steve Clarke’s side in the tournament. Here’s everything you need to know about what Scotland now require to reach the knock-out stages of a major finals for the first time in history.

Steve Clarke's thoughts

A much happier Steve Clarke felt the real Scotland showed up in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland as he confirmed Kieran Tierney has been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Hungary with the injury that forced him to leave the field on a stretcher.

It was what we expected. This is the way we have been playing as a team for the last three or four years. It is why we are here at a major tournament. I thought it was a good team performance against a good opponent. It was a good reaction to a disappointing night and we are still alive in the tournament.
