Update from Cologne

Alan Pattullo, our man inside the Cologne Stadium, has provided an update...

Ralston's error a terrible blow. Just when it looked as if Scotland had the game by the scruff of the neck, a sloppy pass ....and bang. Shaquiri does what he does. Switzerland are now clearly targeting the Celtic full back.

Scotsman sports editor Mark Atkinson pondering a change as half-time approaches...

Anthony Ralston's head must be mush right now. Xhaqiri glides past him there, minutes after the goal. Steve Clarke must be pondering a change if this continues.

And breathe! It’s half-time in Cologne after a 100mph first half where Scotland have given a far better account of themselves than they did against Germany last Friday. Here is our half-time update from Alan Pattullo inside the stadium...

1-1 and Scotland still on course but it felt like they were hanging on at times despite taking the lead. Switzerland have created several chances. Might be a long second half.

Steve Clarke has delivered his half-time message and the second half is underway. Ominously for Scotland, it is Switzerland who have started on the front foot. Two corners in quick succession come to nothing and Scotland will now look to settle down and get a foothold in this game again.

The Man Utd midfielder looks bemused as he’s shown a yellow card for complaining to the referee after a decision to stop the game to allow treatment to a Swiss player while Scotland were on the attack. Only captains are allowed to address the referee at Euro 2024 in a new initiative being trialled by UEFA and Slovakian referee Ivan Kruzliak was having none of it.

Vargas is giving Ralston a torrid time down the left flank. He turns the Scotland defender inside-out before firing a shot at goal that is, thankfully, miles off target. Ralston does not look comfortable out there.

Scotland come so, so close to restoring their lead with 25 minutes left. McTominay wins a free-kick on the edge of the box and Robertson’s wicked delivery is met by Hanley who heads against the post before the Swiss defence scrambles clear. Agonising!

Scotland have suffered a major injury blow with the sad sight of Kieran Tierney being stretchered off after landing akwardly on his leg. The Arsenal defender has endured a miserable time with injuries this season on loan at Real Socieded and the curse has struck again. It looks like his tournament could be over as he is replaced by Scott McKenna. Scotland narrowly avoided a double blow in the same attack as Ndoye fired wide with just Gunn to beat. He should have scored but it remains 1-1 with just over an hour gone.

Scotland have come alive in the last 10 minutes and this game suddenly looks very winnable. A free-kick into the box from Robertson sees McKenna glance a header over. A minute later, the defender charges forward to win a corner. This is more like it Scotland.

79 minutes on the clock and Scotland make their second change with Kenny McLean - the hero of Oslo - replacing Gilmour in midfield. Can he conjur up a late winner? Or would Scotland be happy with a draw that takes their last 16 hopes into the final game? It’s all set up for a nervy final 10 minutes...
