Scotland vs Hungary recap: The Tartan Army left broken hearted as latest of late goals ends Euro 2024 dream.

Key Events

  • Full time: Scotland 0-1 Hungary.
  • Csoboth strikes in the final seconds to end Scotland's dream.

The Tartan Army Pipe Band!

We love this.

What is Scotland's record against Hungary?

Looking for some inspiration ahead of the game tonight?

Scotland vs Hungary. Do or die time. The big one. Whatever you want to call it, tonight’s clash in Stuttgart is one of the nation’s most important games ever. A opportunity to make history, or to suffer a familiar fate - with no in between.

Optimism is flowing through the country, with Scotland knowing a win will likely see them make the last 16 of a major tournament for the first time in history.

But can Clarke’s outfit take inspiration from previous games against Hungary?

This is Scotland’s full head to head record against Hungary - and when they last tasted victory against them.

The Hungarian camp are not happy...

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi singled out both Billy Gilmour, John McGinn and Scott McTominay in the lead up to tonight’s game, saying he expects Scotland to be “aggressive” in tonight’s Group A game.

However, he wasn’t quite as kind to the officials at Euro 2024 and launched a tirade at Dutch ref Danny Makkelie yesterday following his side’s 2-0 defeat to tournament hosts Germany.

Rossi was left incensed when his side were not awarded for an alleged foul in the immediate build-up to Germany’s opener.

“I expect what I have always expected from all match officials,” he fumed. “That they are consistent from the first minute to the last. Unfortunately the Dutch referee didn’t do that in our match against Germany. That’s it. I am not looking for excuses.”

Team news - Clarke forced into changes

While Hungary are expected to make little, if any, changes to the team for tonight’s clash, Scotland will be forced into some.

With Kieran Tierney ruled out of the rest of the tournament due a hamstring injury sustained against the Swiss and Ryan Porteous suspended following his red card against Germany, there are issues in the defence. Who will get the nod to start tonight?

Lawrence Shankland is pushing to start too. Will he replace Che Adams?

This is how we expect take each team to line up at the Stuttgart Arena.

The Tartan Army take over Stuttgart

The Tartan Army have shown up in numbers once again and have flooded the city of Stuttgart in order to roar the boys on.

I was in Cologne for the game against Switzerland and it was an incredible atmosphere, so we can only imagine tonight is going to go one better.

If Scotland win...Stuttgart’s pubs may need to stock up on the drinks!

Team walk cancelled

The Tartan Army have been on incredible form ever since landing in Germany for Euro 2024, backing the team in their thousands across Munich, Cologne and now the city of Stuttgart.

However, so many of them turned up at the team’s Stuttgart base to roar them on that the team’s traditional pre-match walk ahead of the clash with Hungary has had to be cancelled! So many fans had shown up to show their appreciation for the team that security advised them to change plans.

Tons of Scotland fans had gathered at the team’s hotel hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes, but Sky Sports report that the national team’s plans were forced to change because of it.

You really can’t knock the level of support the fans are showing at this tournament. Incredible.

Good afternoon! It's the big one...

The big one. The crunch clash. A day to remember in Scottish football history? However you view it, Scotland vs Hungary is finally here.

The Tartan Army have travelled to Germany in their thousands, with kilts, bagpipes and Scottish optimism taking over Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart. The party is in in full flow and, trust us, nobody wants to head home. Can Scotland extend their stay at the Euros and create history by making the knockouts of a major tournament?

With the 5-1 opening day defeat to Germany now a distant memory (well...sort of) and the battling 1-1 draw with Switzerland more fresh in the memory, the dream of the reaching last 16 is alive and kicking both here at The Scotsman and in Stuttgart.

It hasn’t been done before, but today is the day that Steve Clarke and his side can take the nation where they’ve never been before. Come on Scotland!
