Taking a practical approach to analysis

The prescriptive analytics module is part of what you will study on the new MSc Business Analytics, which is distinctive because it focuses on the practical application of analytical techniques in business settings, rather than their mathematical underpinnings, explains Professor Max Chipulu.

With many companies awash with data, they may not always be certain how to harness it – but this new course will help the workforce of the future to unlock all the benefits of understanding data and making the best use of it to transform their business.

“It’s a rapidly developing field as the technology has evolved so swiftly,” explains Prof Chipulu. “It is all about how we can use that now – we are able to do so much more than we could have done ten years ago, we can handle much more complex problems far more quickly.”

The course looks at how to apply analytical models in a business setting, highlighting how different models can help inform the decisions that business make and add value.

“This would really suit recent graduates who want to convert their degree to an analytical professional degree, or any graduates who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills to transition to this new field.”

In addition, he adds, the curriculum aligns with the Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) qualification, potentially shortening the path to CAP certification for those wanting a future career in business analysis or management consultancy.

Be part of the best business school

With a vision to be the Business School for empowerment, enterprise and employability for all, the school’s latest course embodies this ethos.

Last year the Business School was accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) – placing it among just six per cent of global institutions to have earned the accolade.

The accreditation recognised its excellence in teaching, research, curriculum development, and student learning, making it the ideal place to continue your studies.

How to find out if this is the course for you

Prospective students will have the opportunity to discover whether this is the Master’s course for you by joining a taster lecture on prescriptive analytics at 1pm on Monday, 17 June.

In the session, Prof Chipulu will be explaining a visual simulation model and how it can be applied to understand complex situations. By viewing a business problem or area as a visualisation on the screen then mimicking real-life scenarios, viewers can experiment with various organisational aspects to try new approaches without the risk of failure.

Taster lectures for other Masters programmes are also being held that week – visit napier.ac.uk/study-with-us/postgraduate/postgraduate-events to find out more.
