A spokesman for the City of Edinburgh Council said: "Any members of staff identified in such a complaint are likely to be suspended as a precautionary measure until the investigation is complete."
The police spokeswoman said: "Following an investigation a 39-year-old man has been charged and is due to appear in court on 18 May."
One relative of a child in the nursery class said parents were extremely worried.
"The school wants to stop people from finding out, but when it's your child at risk, I think people need to know," he said.
