Cabaret review: Johnny Woo: Wonder Woo-Man
RATING: * * *
If camp sparkle is your thing, it would be worth turning up to see his quite remarkable sequined cutaway playsuit alone, but there is further spangly enjoyment to be had along his self-revelatory song-and-dance journey from the hell of a 1980s adolescence in the Medway towns to New York’s liberating drag scene.
Woo wears his bitchy literary skills lightly and his array of acid-bright outfits proudly. With the simple accessorising of an auburn bobbed wig, he exploits his uncanny resemblance to Mary Portas and delivers a club paean to the Queen of Shops.
From here, it is only a few small tottering steps to the full Wonder Woman transformation and the fulfilment of his six-year-old self’s ultimate careers dream.
Until 26 August. Today 10:30pm.
